Anson Funds, an activist shareholder in Lionsgate, wrote to the studio's board in July urging it either to lean into generative AI or put itself up for sale, according to Semafor reporting relayed by TheWrap.
The letter argued that markets now sort companies into AI winners and losers, and that Lionsgate shares have fallen whenever video models such as Sora and Seedance launched, a sign investors expect the studio to be hurt. Lionsgate declined to comment.
Anson also pushed for a sale in 2024, ahead of the Starz split. The owner of The Hunger Games, John Wick and Twilight has drawn interest from Legendary and from Banijay, which says it is open to more deals after All3Media.
